Susan Moffett Obituary

Susan Phillips Moffett

Sellersburg, IN - Susan Phillips Moffett passed away on February 28, 2018, surrounded by her devoted family and friends.

Known for her remarkable talents in art and music, boundless kindness and perpetual smile, Susan made every room she entered a little bit brighter just by being there. It's fitting that her medium was printmaking, because she left her mark on everyone she encountered.

Susan quietly but tenaciously defied congestive heart failure for nine years; she never smoked, ate mostly vegan, exercised daily, traveled worldwide, and danced.

She was a talented caller of contra and square dances and loved to play her fiddle. She was a huge fan of IU men's basketball—and sometimes needed help remembering it's just a game.

Born in 1950 in Los Angeles, and raised in Dallas, Texas, she earned her BFA in Drawing and Printmaking from Texas Tech University and her MFA in Printmaking and Painting from Northern Illinois University.

In her 35+ year career at Indiana University Southeast, she shared her passion for fine art and women's studies with innumerable students and faculty. Her prints and drawings were shown in galleries across the U.S., in Ireland and in Europe, and they are valued parts of public and private collections. She was a founding member of Pyro Gallery in Louisville, KY.

Her biggest source of joy and affirmation are her husband, M. Scott Borden, daughters Elaine Phillips Matthias and Audrey Irene Matthias—two remarkable, strong, principled, independent women—and step-son Matthew Borden and grandchildren Willow and Zane—who brought her unbridled delight and laughter. Her brother and his wife, Steve & Cindi Moffett, reside in Carrollton, Texas. She was preceded in death by her brother, Vaughn Moffett, mother, Blanche Philipps Moffett (Witt), and father, Burgess Dewitt Moffett. Her family and friends are grateful for the loving and compassionate medical team at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, KY.

She will be remembered by countless best friends from coast-to-coast for her genuinely inclusive character, generosity, and unending words of encouragement and support.

Her family and friends will celebrate her life on May 19, 2018, in Louisville, KY, with a celebration of life at First Unitarian Church to share memories and stories, followed by a Contra Dance at Highlands Community Ministries featuring special music, dances, and callers.

Susan called our wedding dance, and I felt a bond with her and Scott when we were in the dance community. So many of us found Susan to be a kind, joyful spirit. We will miss her, and we will always feel that kindness and joy.
