James D "Jim" Hardin, age 76, died at Memorial Hospital on Monday, December 31, 2012.
Jim was born and reared in Johnson City, TN. After a four-year stint in the U.S. Navy, Jim married his wife Jane Wells Long in 1960, finished his bachelor's degree at the University of Tennessee in 1964, and then a master's degree from East TN State University a few years later. Jim's first jobs were teaching electronics in Melbourne, FL and then at Columbia State Community College in Columbia, TN. Soon after Jim worked as an electrical engineer at DuPont, which included new-plant consulting stints in New Johnsonville, TN; Tampico, Mexico; Wilmington, DE; DeLisle, MS; and Taipei, Taiwan. Jim and his family have been residents of Biloxi since 1978.
A member of the Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Biloxi, Jim was also a lifelong motorcyclist, a highly skilled mechanic and machinist, a proud volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, and an enthusiastic engineering/robotics advisor to Team Fusion at Gulfport High School.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents George Duffield Hardin in 1963 and Edna Aline McCollough Hardin in 1987, and his son James McCollough Hardin in 1991. Jim is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane Wells Long Hardin; his brother George Alan Hardin; his daughters Carroll Atlee Hardin Cadden and Mary Wells Hardin Venable; his sons Frederick Long Hardin and James Cameron Long Hardin; and his grandson Jamie Lee Hardin.
A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church at 2090 Pass Road in Biloxi on Sunday, January 27, at 1:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be made in Jim's honor to one's favorite charity.

I always admired Jim, from my very first acquaintance with him as the dashing guy on the motorcycle who swept my cousin Jane off her feet, literally, as they sped off down Locust Street on Jim's motorbike. Now THERE was a guy who brought real excitement into our family. He was a wonderfully kind and wise man whom I will remember fondly. My heartfelt condolences to my cousin Jane and to cousins Carroll, Mary, Cameron. I send them my love.

Jane: We are so sorry to hear that Jim has passed away. Our deepest sympathy to you. We remember our days in Taiwan together when you, Jim, and Cameron were there. It was always a pleasure to work with Jim. He always had interesting things to say while we waited at Tienmou in the early mornings for our ride to work at Kuan Yin. Our sincere condolences to you.

To the Jim Hardin family we extend our heartfelt sympathy and condolences. Although we have only known Jim for four years we felt a great love and respect for him. We felt his integrity and love toward his family and friends and feel blessed to be counted as one of his friends. Our prayers are with you and hope that they help you find some peace. Love to all of you. Nannie and papa

Deeply saddened by this news. Gonna miss my long term friend and buddy. A more helpful and supportive person can not be found. We will always remember " dinner and a movie" times together.

Goodbye, Uncle Jim. :( My condolences to my wonderful Aunt Jane, my name-sake, and my cousins, Carroll, Fred, and Mary. (I accidentally started to type "Jamie," too, because I still associate him with you all. I guess they are together now, in some sense.) I wish I could be with you now but am definitely there in spirit. Greetings and condolences from me and my daughters, Chloe and Rachel, who you can see in the picture with Chloe's soon-to-be born son, Travis. (We thought he was going to arrive the same day Jim left! But he has other plans.) I love you all very much. Also, my father Roger Kirchner sends his love and condolences.
