Abbott Scott Bennett, III, was born in Crawford Long Hospital in Decatur, Ga. on April 9, 1947. He grew up in the Medlock area of Decatur and graduated from Tucker High School in 1965, followed by two years of college at Georgia State. Scott died on April 8, 2014, at home in St. Augustine, Fla. He was a 15-year survivor of leukemia.
A true "nature boy" at heart, Scott enjoyed the simple pleasures of the outdoors, and held a special place in his heart for animals. Rescuing tortoises from becoming roadkill was a favorite along with rescuing homeless cats. He referred to himself as a "tree-hugger," respecting the beauty, age and value of trees. The environment was important to Scott, and he recycled before it became popular. Serendipity played its part when his body was cremated on Earth Day, something he would be thrilled about.
Being compassionate to the underdog were part of his spirit. He helped find homes for 21 kittens being fed by a lady on welfare and went on to help her out. Scott was a "good scout" and a faithful husband to Linda, his wife of 45 years. He was an accomplished cook, much to everyone's joy including his own. Music was a big part of Scott's life; he loved sharing his newly discovered artists with family. Photography, books and computer knowledge were favorite things to study and share. He loved to laugh -- we will miss his jovial chuckle and outright stomach crunching boffola, along with his unique sense of humor.
Scott was inventive and was instrumental in putting on Atlanta's first light show with a friend in the mid-1960s. In the early 80s, he discovered he could build stained glass lampshades without forms using geodesic formulas. Scott became a fine gold jewelry artisan when in his mid-30s. When he and his wife opened their own small custom jewelry business in 1982 in Conyers, Ga., they worked side by side hand-crafting personal pieces of jewelry for their customers for 23 years. Scott earned their trust and loyalty by his conscientious workmanship. No stone was too small to be "set well." In 2005, they closed their business and moved to St. Augustine, a dream they had shared for years.
Scott is survived by his wife, Linda Tischer Bennett and mother-in-law, Marie Jane Tischer of St. Augustine; stepmother, Barbara Thrower Bennett of Flat Rock, N.C.; brother, Dale Charles Bennett and wife, Gail of Dahlonega, Ga.; sister, Nancy Louise Bennett and partner, Sheryl Exley of Canton, Ga.; brother-in-law, Richard Douglas Tischer, and wife, April of Orange Park, Fla.; nieces Kira Benton Tischer, Brandy Bennett Erwin; nephew, Dale Bennett, Jr.; cousins, Andy and Rex Anderson.
Scott was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Mary Lou Bridges Bennett; father, Abbott Scott Bennett, Jr.; grandparents, Rose and Charles Bridges; grandparents, Ruth and Abbott Bennett; father-in-law, Richard Adolph Tischer.
To honor and celebrate Scott's life, small individual gatherings of family and friends will take place in accordance with his wishes. Scott's heart will go on in the hearts of those who knew him well and loved him dearly.

Scott had the very unusual ability to find four-leafed clovers. He could be walking past a patch of grass and catch a glimpse of clover in it, only to immediately walk over and pluck out a four-leafed variety! I must have over a hundred four-leafed clovers pressed in-between pages of books.
Here is a poem I wrote to my husband, Scott, on April 8, 2015:
Field of Clover ~ for Scott
If there is a Field of Clover
Where we there can meet again,
I would tell you once more over
You are my love, you are my friend.
Countless stars cascading over
Our souls entwined in Love's repose,
As we lay in fragrant Clover
Dreaming dreams no others know.
Holding hands and gazing upward
Through the starlit summer sky,
Fulfilled, complete we are together,
Wrapped in God's Love we'll never die.
