William Braisted Obituary

BRAISTED, William R, Ph.D. On Wednesday, June 14, 2017, William Reynolds Braisted of Gaithersburg, MD passed at the age of 99. Son of the late Frank A. Braisted, Sr. and Margaret Buzard Braisted; brother of the late Frank A. Braisted, Jr; uncle of John C. Braisted, Nancy K. Hammitt and the late Julie C. Braisted; and great uncle of Christian W. and Matthew H. Braisted, Kathryn H. and Peter H. Hammitt. William spent several of his early years in Asia, inspiring him to later focus on the study of Asian history and culture, earning a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. William was a distinguished professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin from 1942 until 1988. He was appointed to the Order of the Sacred Treasure, 3rd class, by Emperor Hirohito of Japan. Funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Rock Creek Parish, Rock Creek Road & Webster St, NW, Washington, DC on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 1 p.m. (Family will gather from 12:30-1 pm) Interment to follow at Rock Creek Cemetery.
