ALMQUIST
BGen Theodore C. Almquist (USAF, ret), DDS
Born Nov 29, 1941
Died April 27, 2010
BGen Theodore C. Almquist (USAF, ret), DDS passed away peacefully, at home, in his sleep in the early morning hours of April 27th, 2010, culminating a two-year battle with colon cancer. He is survived by his wife Jolayne; children Peter Almquist, Andrew Almquist, and Anna Kaiser; daughter-in-law Melissa Almquist and son-in-law Jason Kaiser; grandchildren Maja Kaiser, Claire Kaiser, Elise Almquist, Ryne Kaiser, and Elin Kaiser; sister Elinor Roberts and brother Jim Almquist, along with many beloved friends. Dr. Almquist was raised in Iowa and married his wife Jolayne in 1962. He received his B.S. degree from Gustavus Adolphus College (MN), his DDS from the University of Iowa, and his M.S. from the University of Texas Dental School (Houston) before beginning a 32-year career with the United States Air Force. After his retirement in 1998 he worked in his spare time with his friends at Lone Star Coins in San Antonio. His career took him to a variety of assignments around the world, and more importantly introduced him to a multitude of wonderful lifelong friends. One of Ted's favorite sayings was "It's a great life if you don't weaken" - and he did live a great life. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman and spent some of his best times - with some of his best friends - "out fishing." He was also an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bulverde, TX where he taught bible studies and sang in the choir. As a leader in the Air Force, he stressed that people's priorities should be their faith, their family, and their jobs - in that order. He lived this ideal in his own life, and was a strong man of faith as well as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be well-remembered by his family, friends, and many, many 'fishing buddies,' and will be sorely missed by those he leaves behind. He was at peace with his Maker and is now in a much better place.

Words cannot express how fortunate I feel to have met a man such as Ted. To say that he had a significant impact on my life would be a huge understatement. The Air Force, Dentistry, and all who have crossed paths with him are indeed very fortunate to have been associated with Ted.
I pray that time will turn the sadness of losing this great husband, father, mentor and friend into warm memories and comfort for his loving family.

Jolayne & family,
My sincerest condolences to you and your family at this time. Though I did not know Ted that well, the time I got to see him in his role as the loving, friendly, easy going, helpful, sometimes forgetful, and most of all funny grandfather was a pleasure. Maja and Claires' faces always lit up when he came to the classroom to drop off or pick up his "special little darlings". He always had something funny to say and never failed to have a smile on his face as he spoke to me or the girls. God has added the newest "angel" to his troop to watch over you all. God bless you .

I did not have the good fortune to know Ted well, as so many did. I knew him only casually when I would see him in the coin shop. I quickly came to like and admire Ted; I sometimes teased him, and he teased me back. Ted was unpretentious and easy to be with. It was a nice comfortable friendship, and I am among the many who miss him. Enjoy your new life, Ted!

Jolayne and to the rest of the family, I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. It was a pleasure to have visited you and Ted at your home and at Lonestar where Ted and I enjoyed our hobby. He was very courageous and understanding when I went through my loss of my father because of his own battle with cancer. My thoughts and prayers goes to you and your family.

Growing up in Albert City with Ted, I knew he would be a leader and a wonderful person. He achieved both. Being the MC of our 50 high school reunion he brought memories, laughter and pennies with important dates to his classmates. Ted will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Jolayne, his family and friends.
