Christine Cavanaugh Obituary

August 16, 1963 - December 22, 2014 Christine was born Aug. 16, 1963 to Waldo E. Sandberg and Rheta Mason Sandberg. At the age of 15 Christine's "mamma" Margaret Sandberg passed away and she was welcomed into the home of Kirt and Linda Johnson, which she considered her Mom and Dad for the rest of her life. She graduated from Layton High School in 1981. Attended Utah State University after high school, then attended University of Hawaii where she met her future husband. After college she moved to California to pursue her acting career. Christine married Kevin James Cavanaugh in 1985; they later divorced. Her acting career started in 1988, with her big break in 1991 when she used her amazing talent to bring Goslyn Duck from Dark Wing Duck to life. She did too many things in her career to list including TV and movie appearances. Some of her major career accomplishments includes her voice as Chuckie (Rugrats 1991-2003), Marty Sherman (The Critic 1994-1995), Oblina (Ahhhhh Real Monsters 1994-1997), Babe (Babe 1995), and Dexter (Dexter's Laboratory 1996-2003). She was able to do incredible and amazing things with her voice and bring lots of smiles and many laughs to many people who are now young adults. Christine retired from her voice career in 2001 and moved to be closer to her family. Christine had no biological children of her own. However she was the god mother to Isabel Torres, daughter of her childhood friend Susan Yoshikawa Torres. There is more than can be mentioned in brief page in the final chapter of a life too large to be described, to know the story you would have had to read the book. Unfortunately we really only know the parts we played big or small. Christine has touched many lives, some we know and others we do not. Whether she was a baby sitter as an adolescent, a voice in a cartoon, an aunt, a sister, and friend, young or old it didn't matter. She always made the most of where you were and what circumstance arose. Her imagination, humor and intelligence were evident to anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her. It was of no surprise when she was able to share her talents with the world. Many know of her from the roles she played, but in each role there was a part of her showing through that the ones who truly knew her could see. The childlike awe of the world, humor to deal with the unpleasantness of reality, strength to deal with the challenges we all face, and intelligence to know when to act or accept what fate had allowed. Christine lived her life the way she wanted. Accolades, notoriety, and recognition were not the reason for her interest in entertainment, it was for the love of entertainment, to make people smile. When her life changed she found herself needing the quiet of the country and her love changed from entertaining to hiking, reading, writing and living a simple life. Even with the evolution in her life her wit, wisdom and imagination were still alive and well. "Death is not the end of life, just a changing of worlds" (unknown) "Each of us is here for a brief sojourn" Albert Einstein Christine was preceded in death by her mom, Linda Johnson of Cedar City, Ut. Her papa, Waldo E. Sandberg of Richfield, Ut. Her mother, Rheta Mason of Ogden Ut. And her mamma, Margaret Sandberg of Layton, Ut. Christine is survived by her Dad, Kirt Johnson and Paula Thompson of Cedar City, Ut. Her sister, Deionn (Matt) Masock and their children, Alec, Nash and Madison. Her brother, Kirtis (Hope) Johnson and their children Felicia and Amanda. Her half siblings, Stanley Sandberg, Steven Sandberg, Ann Marie Ruttenbur, Jesse Sharky, Catherine Sharky, Leigh M. Clark and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Stone ceremony was held in her honor on Antelope Island, a place she loved and visited often with her papa.

for Christine Cavanaugh

Not sure what to say?

We the Melvilles lived in the apartment below Christine and Kevin in Studio City, CA. We spent time together in the back of the apartment building playing table tennis. We enjoyed an outing together on Olvera Street in downtown L.A. (took a picture, 1990). Saw a couple of her live plays, one in NoHo and one in Riverside at the old theater. She was a sweet and lovely person! Many fond memories. She would've made a great mother!
So glad to have had her in our lives! All our heartfelt sympathy and prayers!
She died too young, just like her biological mother!

I would like to express my sorrow for you Christine. You gave true life to some of the most memorable characters from my childhood. I will forever have you in my heart and as I re-watched your performance on Salute Your Shorts, I am reminded that the world truly became dimmer having lost such a talented and quirky actress.

I miss her voice. I liked that raspy quality in her sound. She was one of the reasons why I became a phonetician. So on this day I am as grateful as I am sad. She brought joy to my life.

My wonderful Christine,
I was thinking about you today because you was in my dream last night. I wanted to tell you that you helped me get rid of a really bad memory that stayed with me for three years, it was a really rough time with bullying.

I have been watching Rugrats a lot lately and the episode "Music" made me smile, especially your song and this quote in paticular:
"Pack away all the scary things that make you sad... And smile, smile, smile!" Chuckie Finster

I just wanted to say thank you for helping me. Thank you for coming to see me in my dream. Please come see me again! I love you. <3

I think about you a lot and sometimes, I imagine you telling me "Everything will be okay." You have been in my dreams before. You made the world right for me.

Dear Christine Cavanaugh,

You have been a light to my life. You always make me smile with Dexter's Laboratory. I was introduced to Dexter's Laboratory in November, and it made me laugh right away, I wanted to see more of it. I hope you know you're still making people laugh, you're still making people smile, you're still lighting up the lives of people because you do that for me.
On weekends, we go stay with my grandpa and we watch Dexter's Laboratory. My favorite episode is Lab-retto, I always like singing along with Dexter. The episodes with you as Dexter is my favorites. You are, to me, the best Dexter. I just wanted to say thank you, Christine Cavanaugh, thank you so much for always making me smile and laugh. I hope you're looking down on me and the rest of your fans, smiling. :,) You are a true angel and will always be remembered, not as just a voice actress but as a person. A wonderful, great person.
I'll never forget you. <3

When I was two years old, I fell in love with the Nickelodeon TV show, "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters!, because I was born in the late 1990's. Then, when I first saw Oblina, I was amazed and mesmerized with what she could really do to scare those humans away. I was really impressed that she wasn't spoiled because she came from a wealthy family, and that's another reason why I like her. As I got a little older, I never stopped drawing pictures of me with her together. Two years ago, I've been having a rough Christmas with my family. And it wasn't until New Year's Eve when I found out Oblina passed away. I was honestly devastated and heartbroken, which I knew was even worse than Robin William's death. I've always considered Oblina as my best friend, and I will never forget her for as long as I live. Thank you, Christine Cavanaugh, for playing my best friend. You made a memory in my childhood I will always keep close to my heart. Rest in peace, Oblina. I love you. :) <3

Chirstine really was a real life angel. Her eyes, smile, voice and just everything about her makes me love her more and more each day. Although only less than eleven months I ever knew of her, I feel like that she was and always will be more than just a talented actress, both off and on screen. It's strange to say that I never really grew up with most of her skills, the only characters I can ever remember early back was Chuckie, Dexter, Babe and Bud Smith, and yet, not only do I feel that she's an understandable person with past troubles to relate to and such, but in the last fourteen years of my whole life I feel as if I connect with her. Not because of the characters I, and many others, grew and love and adore, but more then that. It is silly to think such a thing but there really is something about her that no one can ever know of, I honestly think of her almost everyday since the first time I've ever heard of her passing. It's like how Lilo from 'Lilo and Stitch' deeply loves and admires Elvis. I'm honestly completely disappointed in myself for never knowing about this incredible woman in the first place, but it would make sense though, due to I was only born in the exact same year she retired. Her name would have appeared in the credits and that was about it. Nothing else I knew of before January this year. I bless and pray for her and her dear family and friends right now and for the rest of my life. Someone should make a book or documentary about her. She's just too much of an incredible lady not to do so. No matter what other people agree or not when I say this, but NO ONE can ever replace miss Christine. Candi Milo, Nancy Cartwright or anyone use can voice all the characters she left behind, but can never BE them. Each and every one of those characters are Christine and always will be a Christine.... <3

Your first big break in voice acting actually happened the year I was born - 1991. I grew up with the Rugrats, and other shows like AAAHH!!! Real Monsters, Dexter's Laboratory, and the movie Babe. I couldn't have hoped to understand the measure of passion you had put into your roles when I was so young, but now looking back, I can't help but smile and think about how much fun you must have had the entire time. I appreciate the time you spent doing voice work for shows that will forever be ingrained in the minds of the children of that generation. You might be gone for now, but you most certainly will never be forgotten, and I can only hope to come face to face with you one day - in some other realm, or reality. Rest In Love.

My dearest Christine. You always made me feel like I fit in in this crazy place we both landed called Hollywood. You were kind and generous to all. You kicked my butt when I needed it too. So sorry that we lost touch over the years. I ran into a mutual friend and she told me you had passed. I know that heaven is rejoicing your presence just as we here are missing you. Godspeed dear one.

I remember back in 1998, I sent a hand drawn birthday card to Christine. A few days later, I got a message from her in which I remember her said "Hello, Tom, this is a voice from your past". I last met her at the 1998 Annie Awards, in which she was nominated for best voice. She didn't win but she gave a heartfelt congratulations to the winner, which happens to be the legendary June Foray. Later, when Christine first met another voice legend, Lucille Bliss,(the voice of "Smurfette" she thought " Yeah, you're June Foray's sister".

Christine had a very well-honed skill. Her work as a voice actor stands on a very tall pedestal in my eyes. Her unique voice is burned into the very deepest reaches of my childhood--a testament to the creative application of her acting skills. In fact, I doubt I'll ever forget the voices of Dexter, Chuckie, Oblina and so many others. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who will carry her voice in their head. I can only offer my sincerest condolences to the family. The world of voice acting has suffered a loss, and her presence will be missed by many who also grew up listening to her famous characters.

You were a treasured presence in my childhood - Rugrats will forever hold a special place in my heart and even from an early age I admired your work. You were part of my introduction to voice acting which has since become a lifelong passion of mine. Little 5 year old me was so amazed when I learned that Babe was actually voiced by a talented grown up lady, what wizardry was that? And to then discover you were Chuckie too!? That was beyond incredible in my book. What an ability! And watching you at work in video recordings for Rugrats Lost in Paris, seeing you giggle inbetween takes, it seemed as though you were having the time of your life doing what you did. I couldn't help longing to do that myself. You made voice acting amazing.

Thank you so much for your performances over the years and the joys and tears you brought with them.

Deepest sympathies and wellwishes to your loved ones at this most difficult of times. RIP, you left far too early.
