M. Allen Obituary

M.E. "Gene" Allen, 86, slipped the surly bonds of earth and touched the face of God, Friday, Feb. 18, 2011. Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Chapel. A private burial will take place at a later date. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Texas. Gene was born Dec. 28, 1924, in Mercedes. Gene served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, flying C-47s throughout the Pacific Islands, including dropping paratroopers during the Battle of Corregidor. He met his wife, Pat, at the University of Texas at Austin in 1947. After their wedding, his first assignment was to fly in the Berlin Airlift. Gene also served his country during the Vietnam War, beginning in 1968. Among his many medals and commendations, he was awarded two Legions of Merit and the Bronze Star for bravery. After a 30-year Air Force career, he retired to Hurst in 1973 where he started a custom jewelry business and art gallery in the Stockyards in Fort Worth, which took up his leisure time for decades, until poor health kept him at home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Myrtle Allen of Mercedes; and his brother, Vann of Fort Worth. Survivors: His wife of 62 years, Pat; son, Michael and his wife, Harriette; son, Steve and his wife, Cindy; son, Larry and his wife, Lisa; daughter, Susan and her husband, Jack; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sister, Mardelle Allen Fitzgerald of Harlingen; sister-in-law, Gloria Allen of Grand Junction, Colo.; and his faithful dog, Rookie.
