It's with deep pain to learn that Sharon Coles-Stewart has died. I am so sorry that I did not know and could not pay my respects.

I was unable to get to Sharon's Memorial Service, but I wanted to belatedly express how dear a friend my cousin was to me from childhood when her mother and grandmother used to visit my family in Smithfield. We also visited Newport News so see Cousin Ollie and the Coles. I loved playing with Sharon and the Cole children and recall Sharon as being especially bright and musically talented. Sharon and her husband Larry Stewart, my first cousin on my Dad's side, visited me as newlyweds when they were in Raleigh, NC. They have a beautiful and bright daughter Lawren, whom I cherish as one of my youngest cousins on both my maternal and paternal sides of the family. My condolences to the Coles, Stewarts, and most especially to Lawren. In Memory of Sharon, for this All Souls Holy Day 2016, I have submitted a Memorial Mass enrollment in her memory to Trinity Missions, also honoring Lawren.

Lawren and family, it is with deep sadness that I am writing this as Sharon was my friend before I met her. She sent me a letter when I applied to Marshall Wythe School of Law at William & Mary to encourage me to come in 1973. She wanted to encourage me because she wanted more black students at the law school. She was the first person to find me once I entered, and I found a friend for life. I was her first associate at Sharon A. Coles and Associates in Newport News. Two weeks before her transition I spoke with her not realizing her eminent departure from this earth, although I knew she was ill. But there is no doubt that Sharon sits on the right hand of the Father. She never changed and always expected the best of mankind as well as the best advocate for the defenseless. We would talk for hours on the phone and when I would come to Virginia she would without fail come to visit with crabs in tow.
I will miss her so

I am so sadden by the loss of the beautiful (inside and out)) Sharon Cole. We were so close for so many years--so long ago. For my husband and me, she was our little sister in the law and a close social friend. We will miss so much that there will not be another time to enjoy her smile, her beautiful hair, her legal expertise, great conversation and the good times. Love to the family.

When my mother died, I inherited her violin. I started using that violin in the orchestra that Sharon and I shared a stand in. Sharon, who never met my mother, said she heard my mother when I played that violin. I believe that when Sharon's violin is played again, Sharon will be heard by those listening.

After some 47 years the warmth and love so evident in who I knew as Sharon Coles can still be felt. Even at 19 years of age she was remarkable. Many don't know of the great things she accomplished with the Black Students Association and Student Government at Eastern Michigan University. For a period I was her best friend. It's a tragedy for me to never get to see her after hoping to do so so much, in recent years, particularly this year. I'm in a state of shock.
I will truly miss her , even after all these years.

May She Rest In Peace!, Christopher Brian Booker, Fort Washington, Maryland

Dear Family,

It's really hard to comprehend Sharon's passing. I am so sorry.

Wayne and I just talked with Sharon a few months ago for more than two hours. We talked about old times, our parents, our siblings, our children, and the special cookouts at Daddy Lee and Big's house, which I'll never forget. (I went to those cookouts at her grandparents' house from at least 5th grade until I went away to college and a few more times after college.) Sharon also talked about the love of her life, her daughter, Lawren. Lawren, your mother was special and she will be missed. I hope to meet you.

Lawren, Frank, Wanda, Larry, Michelle, Pam, and other family members, we are so sorry for your loss. May the wonderful memories you have of your loved one be always in your hearts to comfort you. Love you all.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Sharon's family. I have many fond memories of Sharon and the conversations we used to have about family, law practice, friendship and faith. We walked together at one of the Relays for Life. I especially appreciated her insight and wisdom and sincere, warm smile. I miss her very much. Jeff Rountree.

August 5, 2016

My thoughts, prayers and love are with Lauren, Frank and the rest of the family. This is news that shocked me deeply as Sharon and I grew up together at St. Aug's, and had a chance to share many times that resulted in such happy memories. I hold on to those memories, her smile, her love of God and all that He represented to us, her love of music, her pursue of her law degree and then most importantly, her love for her daughter, Lauren. When we did have a chance to re-connect as adults and Moms, it was always to share stories of our girls and to seek advice from each other. I will miss the physical presence but I will preserve our sincere, loving relationship in my heart. I pray that you all find some comfort in remembrance of the good times with Sharon and as you struggle with the challenges of this time, I pray that those memories will bring some semblance of peace and comfort to you all. May God's love and His angels surround you, strengthen you and shower you with the love that epitomized Sharon's love for you all.

Lauren, Frank and Family, you remain in my heart, my thoughts and most importantly, in my prayers.

I knew Sharon only for a brief time, because I had the privilege of working together with her on a case that she handled in the Hampton Circuit Court and which has been appealed to the Supreme Court of Virginia. I use the word "privilege" deliberately. Sharon was a dedicated, hard-working, and compassionate advocate for her clients. I am shocked and sorely grieved to learn of her passing, but I consider it a genuine privilege to have known and worked with her.
