Sept. 30, 1925

Oct. 9, 2014

Patricia Hiester died on October 9, 2014. She was devoted to her husband and her 4 daughters and also to her deep Catholic faith. She was born in Santa Cruz, California to Charles and Katherine Cavanagh on September 30, 1925. Her family, in their early years, lived at Cavite Naval Base in the Philippine Islands. Her father was Shop Master of the Forge shop at the Naval Base. Luckily, her parents moved to Pearl Harbor in the 30's. Pat graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Honolulu. After December 7, 1941, her older brother joined the Navy. She moved to San Jose, California, where she attended San Jose State College and graduated with a BA in education with a minor in mathematics. She taught mathematics in Hollister, California, at Hollister High School and Hollister Junior College for a few years. She completed a year of graduate study and received a Masters Degree as a Public Health Analyst. She worked for the Health Department in San Jose and later for the State Health Department in San Francisco.

She married Alan Hiester at St Leo's Church in San Jose, California, on October 7, 1950. Alan worked for the Pacific Telephone Company. They began married life living in a 4-plex in Berkeley, CA. Pat used to say, "Whenever Alan phones and asks me to get a baby sitter and go to lunch - it means we are moving again (Berkeley to San Raphael to Palo Alto to Sacramento to Reno). After the birth of her first daughter, Pat became a homemaker and taught CCD in every town she moved to. She was co-president (with Marge Fuestch) of our Lady of the Snows Altar Society for many years.

Patricia was preceded in death by her sister, Geraldine Cavanagh and brother Carlos (Betty) Cavanagh. She is survived by her husband, Alan; daughters Mary Lou Carey of Fallon, Katherine (Rich) Getto of Boise, Idaho, Carol (Mike) Amos of Fallon, and Joanne (Dan) Cohen of La Mesa, California; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

A Rosary will be held at 10:15 AM just prior to her Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Conception Church in Sparks at 10:30 AM on Tuesday October 14th. A light hosted reception at the church will follow Mass. Interment at Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery in Reno will be held after the Mass around 1:00 PM.
